Walter Kraus is 97-years-old and is a resident of Sydmar Lodge Care Home, which is located on Edgware’s Hale Lane. He received the famous Legion of Honour medal and has stated that he will be wearing it with pride the next time he attends the AJEX Parade.
Walter has lived in the UK since 1939, having fled the Nazi occupation of Vienna and endured a period of internment in Belgium. He subsequently opted to volunteer for the British Army and went on to play a significant role in the war.
He fought in 1940’s Battle of France and then later went on to participate in the landings on Normandy beach and helped to liberate France. Speaking to the Jewish News, he stated that:
“I was touched to receive the award, it is very nice. But on the other hand, I think of those who didn’t come back, who are still in the fields, in Flanders.”
Nursing homes located within the area often choose to make use of newsletter printing, to keep the community up to date with the events and news of the care homes.
