A brand new playground that was constructed in honour of the head teacher’s grandparents has been unveiled at a primary school in Edgware.
Children from the Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School, located on Edgware’s Hale Lane, embraced the new facilities – which include an obstacle course – with enthusiasm.
One of these pupils, Shifra Kohn, aged five, was given the task of officially opening the playground before the rest of her schoolmates swarmed over it.
The playground memorialises Benjamin and Emilie Altbach, the grandparents of Ruth Wilkinson, head teacher for the school, with the funding being provided by Lord and Lady Levy, their son-in-law and daughter.
Wilkinson has been a member of staff at the primary for a decade and a half, and she told the local press that the new playground represented a massive improvement on the basic tarmac area that it replaces, adding:
“It’s lovely that this has been named after my grandparents, they would be proud. Family was the most important thing in their life, as well as their children and grandchildren.”

The new playground features a variety of play options for the children, including several climbing frames and equipment and artificial turf, alongside the obstacle course.
