Plans have been put forward for the creation of a special ‘school street’ outside a school not far from Edgware, and the public is now being asked for its feedback on them.
The street in question is Swan Lane in Whetstone, which runs immediately outside St John’s Primary School. What is being proposed is the temporary closure of that street to cars and other traffic during periods of the day when children are being dropped off and picked up from school. It is hoped that this would reduce the risk of children being involved in road accidents.
Barnet Council is behind the idea, and it has launched a consultation with the public about it. This will provide residents of the area with the opportunity to express their opinions about the proposal.
If the scheme goes ahead, it will mark the tenth street in Barnet to become a ‘school street’. A further nine are currently being trialled, which would be the first step for Swan Lane. That trial period would last for 18 months.
