A historic building just a few miles from Edgware has been saved for use by the local community, following a campaign by a museum.
Tudor Hall is a building that dates back to 1573, when Queen Elizabeth I chartered it. It was owned and managed by Barnet and Southgate College, but the school opted to sell it just over a year ago. The guide price that was set for the building was £1 million and that made a private buyer the likeliest outcome; at least until Barnet Museum entered the fray.
It started a campaign during 2024 that was aimed at preventing this from happening. The hall had always been available for local people to rent for live events and Barnet Museum was keen to keep it that way. Now, the success of this campaign has been confirmed.
Flyer printing by shops in Edgware is one of the ways in which the organisers of local campaigns can spread the word about them. Flyers can be produced quickly and distributed on the streets.
The museum and several heritage groups joined forces to get Tudor Hall registered as being an asset of community value (ACV). This means that any sale has been blocked for six months, enabling funding to be found and a bid to be made, which the college accepted.
