Plans to add special zones for use by cyclists and pedestrians outside schools in Barnet have been published, with two Edgware schools among those that would be included.
Colindale Primary School and Edgware Primary School in the town are among those that would get these zones if the plans were to be approved. The idea behind them is to make the streets close to the schools safer for use by children, while also cutting carbon emissions to help the environment.
Only drivers with the necessary permits would be allowed to take their vehicles into these zones during those periods when the pupils attending the schools are being collected or dropped off by their parents. Local schools sometimes use Stationery printers in Edgware to create their teaching materials.
This idea is being called the ‘School Streets’ scheme. In the case of Edgware Primary School, it would see the zone for cyclists and pedestrians enforced between 8:30 am and 9:30 am, as well as 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm every weekday. For Colindale, the hours would be between 8:15 am and 9:15 am and 2:45 pm and 3:30 pm during the week.
For these periods, some streets close to the schools would be out of bounds for drivers unless they get a permit. These will be made available to those who need them, such as owners of businesses.
