Curtis Elton, aged 12, and his 11-year-old sister Sophia both attended the ceremony in person to receive their GLL Sport Foundation prize. Mark Shooter, Barnet’s mayor, was there to present it to them, in recognition of their ice skating contribution.
Elton is already the youngest ever schoolboy to secure a pianoforte diploma, which is equivalent to a university degree, from Trinity College London. He is currently studying for the masters, but took an evening off to pick up his award.
A number of talented young athletes from Edgware and other towns in Barnet were celebrated at the GLL Sport Foundation awards, which were held in Hendon Leisure Centre. This foundation was set up to provide backing to promising UK athletes.
Speaking to a reporter from Edgware Today, the siblings’ mum, Hayley, stated that:
“It was a lovely ceremony. I am extremely proud of their achievement but they do deserve it. They work extremely hard. I let them stay up late, it didn’t finish until 9pm and they missed the next day of training, but it was worth it.”
