The cathedral has been awarded £870,000 by the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund (FWWCCRF). The money will be invested in repairing the Chapel of Unity, as this building has had problems with its slates. When the chapel is restored to its former glory, it could be featured on Postcards from Coventry.
A spokesperson for the Cathedral told the Coventry Telegraph:
“Coventry Cathedral is really delighted that we are going to be able to complete a full and lasting repair of the Chapel of Unity with a grant from the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund.”
The spokesperson added that the funding has facilitated trial work on the project. Furthermore, the spokesperson revealed that the issue of the slates on the chapel had been a problematic one since around 1962.
Cathedrals in England have a general economic impact and boost employment. They have a specific influence on the development of the tourism sector. It has been estimated that over £200 million is contributed to the UK economy because of English cathedrals.
The building was constructed from pink sandstone. However, green slate cladding was put on the chapel so it matched the vision of the designer. Unfortunately, it proved difficult to secure the slates.Get a Free Quote for Postcards
