The road tunnel that runs beneath the railway station at Clapham Junction could undergo a major refurbishment, after a competition was launched to come up with designs.
This contest has been devised by Wandsworth Council in collaboration with the London Festival of Architecture. It is being called Transforming Falcon Road Bridge, and the idea is that teams of designers should submit artistic ideas to brighten up the tunnel while also honouring both the history and the modern community of Clapham.
These ideas should seek to deal with some of the practical problems the tunnel currently has too, such as the difficulties in maintaining it, its durability, and its environmental impact.
Falcon Road Bridge is a much-used facility that stretches 100 metres from the eastern part of the station at Clapham Junction to the railways. However, recent years have taken their toll on its appearance.
Graphic design outlets in Clapham can be a useful resource for teams entering competitions of this kind, in helping to turn their visions into full-fledged images.
Simon Hogg from Wandsworth Council said the tunnel runs through the heart of the residential and shopping districts of Clapham, so improving its appearance is important. He expressed his joy that the plan was finally taking shape.
Those who wish to enter the competition must register by Thursday, September 12
