What's Happening in London - Clapham, England…

Redevelopment planned for listed Clapham building

A building in Clapham that has Grade II listed status is set to undergo a major process of redevelopment that will see it transformed into a block of offices and retail units.

The building, which used to be home to the Arding and Hobbs department store, is situated across from Clapham Junction and is a notable feature of the area. The proposals that have been approved by the planning committee for Wandsworth Council will see it brought back to life, while ensuring that the heritage of the building is kept intact.

The TK Maxx that is already situated there will remain, but a number of brand new leisure, restaurant and retail facilities will be filling up the empty spaces on the lower floors. An extension will also be added to the roof.

Meanwhile, the floors in the upper part of the building will be turned into offices for local firms. Companies based within the area sometimes look to places that can supply corporate gifts, to help them attract new clients.

According to London News Online, Sascha Lewin from developers W.RE said that putting in offices was the most innovative part, adding:

“It’s directly opposite a major transport hub, Clapham Junction, and it sits in an affluent, very nice part of London, traditionally not used for offices.”

No word on when work starts has been given.
