Clapham man with rare illness to run charity marathon

A man residing in Clapham suffering from a rare disease that leads to muscle wastage has announced he will be taking part in a marathon to raise money for charity.

Lew Mathias is 29 years old and works as an engineering manager. He suffers from a disease known as Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1, which he was diagnosed with seven years ago. This is a highly uncommon condition that causes the muscles to waste away. Mathias will be entering this year’s London Marathon to raise much needed funds for charity.

It would represent a tough challenge for anyone, let alone someone with such a debilitating condition, but Mathias is determined to complete the challenge. He told In Your Area that he wants to demonstrate that his illness will not hold him back from accomplishing things.

Mathias is aiming to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Poster printing is a frequently used promotional method for charities to raise awareness about their causes and for people to spread the word about their fundraising efforts.

Mathias is currently in training for the marathon and it will be a big step up for him. The furthest he has previously run is 10km, but he is enjoying the preparations and is confident ahead of the event.

The London Marathon takes place on Sunday 27th April, when tens of thousands of people will take on the distance for their chosen charities.
