Called The Water Lantern Festival, it is based on a Thai celebration known as Chiang Mai. Each person who attends it will be able to float an environmentally friendly lantern on one of the common’s ponds. All of these lanterns will have their own unique messages inscribed onto them, which can be joyous, reflective or hopeful. The effect will be to turn the pond into a dreamlike array of drifting lights against the night sky.
This festival was first held at Clapham Common last autumn, when it proved to be a resounding success. However, those behind it say that 2026 will be even better. It will feature fun activities, a variety of foods and live music.

The director of The Water Lantern Festival is Seth Hewett. He told London Now that it is about bonding with others and self-reflection.
He then added:
“We’ve seen how powerful it can be to create space for reflection, and we’re excited to bring back that experience to London in such a beautiful setting.”
The organiser of the festival is a company called Fever. It will take place on 19 and 20 September.
