English album for Clapham-based French singer
A singer-songwriter who was born in France but is now based in Clapham is releasing his first ever English language album, as he bids to make a connection with audiences in this country.
Mathieu Boogaerts relocated to the UK back in 2016 and now lives part of the time in Clapham and part of it in Brixton. He has made seven previous albums during the course of his two-decade-long career, but all of them have featured French lyrics. He has opted to change that with his latest release, which has been given the name ‘Boogaerts (en anglais)’.
Speaking to London News Online about this decision, Boogaerts stated that he had found himself feeling increasingly lonely and isolated in his adopted country due to the language barrier. He then said that he had avoided using a dictionary when writing the new album, so that the words would remain personal, before going on to add:

‘Boogaerts (en anglais)’ will be released on Friday, February 26.

“If I was a painter, I would say French has so many colours and so many possibilities with so many vowel sounds. This record is written with a naïve English because my English is not good, but it was also a challenge.”
