Clapham haberdasher to be celebrated in exhibition
A man who ran a haberdashery in Clapham for over half a century is set to be honoured with his own exhibition next year, after a campaign to raise the money proved successful.
Maurice Dorfman spent 60 years running Jeanette Fashions in Clapham High Street, until he died aged 87 in February. Local photographer Jim Grover encountered Dorfman four years ago while creating a project called ‘48 Hours on Clapham High Street’, and following his funeral he came up with the idea of creating a special exhibition to recognise his life and work.
He used crowdfunding to try to raise the money needed and the idea captured public imagination to such a degree that he surpassed his goal of £7,700 weeks before his November 19, deadline. This money will be used to stage the exhibition and secure the prints needed for it. Local printing services often provide the best prices for events based in the area.

“When you’ve been on the high street this long, you’re part of the community and I see this as a community celebration of this remarkable man and the way that he touched so many lives over so long.”
The exhibition will be titled ‘The Life of Maurice Dorfman’ and it will take place in 2021, although an exact date has not ye
