What's Happening in London - Clapham, England…

Bid launched to save neon sign near Clapham

A woman has launched a campaign to restore a neon sign that can be found not far from Clapham, and she has already secured support from others in the district.

Alison Sinclair wishes to revive the sign reading ‘Roberts for Ekcovision’ that hung over the shops in Balham, near Clapham, which were owned by her grandparents during the 1960s. It was put up after Ekco, a company that made televisions during that decade, approached her family about using it above their electrical shop and showroom.

The brightly lit sign went on to become an iconic feature of the area, as it was visible from the local tube station, giving it the feel of a welcome sign. However, the Roberts electrical store closed down at the end of the 1980s, and the sign has since been allowed to fall into disrepair.

Now, Alison is aiming to get it fixed and lit up once more. To do that, she will have to secure roughly £21,000; graphic design shops in Clapham can help with fundraisers by providing smart posters to promote them.

She has already managed to raise £15,000 through a Heritage of London Trust grant and has set up a crowd-funding page for the rest. This has brought in £2,500 so far.

Alison has stated that she feels her grandparents would be proud of the campaign.
