Work on Co-op conversion expected to begin soon

The process of transforming the landmark Co-op in Chesterfield into a leisure centre and hotel is expected to get underway within the near future, according to the developers behind the scheme.

The planning application

recently received a conditional green light from Chesterfield Borough Council, with the project set to turn the Elder Way building into a hub offering accommodation, fitness and dining facilities.

This building is owned by Central England Co-operative and it has teamed up with Jomast Developments Ltd on the project, which will see a number of its existing features retained.

A period of 18 months has been set aside for the completion of the multi-million pound conversion. When finished there will be a budget hotel boasting 89 rooms on the top floor, six ground floor restaurants and a basement fitness centre.

Jomast Ltd’s development director, Adam Hearld, told the Derbyshire Times that:

“Talks are at a fairly advanced stage with a number of businesses to occupy the hotel, restaurants and health and fitness area. We can’t yet reveal who we’re talking to as discussions are ongoing.”

He added that the company was also developing an idea for enhancing the area’s public spaces, with work due to start when both parts of the project are ready.
