Rykneld Square is being brought up to date with brand new paving stones, additional plants and grassy areas. Work on that began during the summer but was halted after important historical remains were uncovered. Since then, the square has been occupied by archaeologists and they have made further discoveries. These include a section of churchyard and walls from the 17th century or earlier, with more digging still to be done.
Now Chesterfield Borough Council has confirmed that it will not resume the landscaping work until the archaeological dig is completed. All finds uncovered during it will be recorded at Chesterfield Museum.
Museums and similar venues in the town sometimes make use of local shops that offer brochure printing. This is so that they can provide their visitors with information Brochures.
Kate Sarvent from the council told BBC News:
“We’re excited to unearth more of our town’s history and it’s important that we follow the proper procedure and investigate this discovery.”
The local authority is putting a temporary paving surface in place at the square. This will enable key events to take place there, such as those over the festive season.
The landscaping work is expected to begin again sometime in 2026.
