New image on the cards for Chesterfield school

From September 2014, The Meadows Community School in Chesterfield is to undergo a re-branding exercise that will be overseen by headteacher Tracey Burnside.

Mrs Burnside said that she hoped the changes would help to make pupils feel proud of their school, and would form part of its transformation into an "outstanding" educational establishment.

Chesterfield Stationery printers could soon be busy providing Mrs Burnside and her staff with headed notepaper and other essentials, because the school is to change its name from The Meadows to Whittington Green School. Whittington Green was chosen because the area in which the school is situated bears this name on old Ordnance Survey maps. Mrs Burnside said that all of the school's 450 pupils had been "on board" regarding the changes and that all of them felt positive about the re-branding project.

Another aspect of the school that is set to change is its uniform, with blazers being introduced. These will have a school badge sewn on the breast pocket with symbols that include a mining wheel, a magpie and a cock. The mining wheel refers to Chesterfield's mining history, while the birds echo those which appear on the town's crest. The date 1668, which appears across the lower part of the badge, is a reference to Revolution House near Chesterfield, which was visited by noblemen involved in the revolution of 1668.
