From their open top bus the players and manager, Paul Cook, waved to the cheering supporters. Amid a host of poster printing and banner printing, the parade went from the Proact stadium and through the town before arriving at the Town Hall.
The team then left the bus, before Cook appeared moments later on the balcony of the Town Hall to address the hundreds of fans. He said:
“We’re delighted because at the start of the season we set out with the players to try and be successful.
“And you know it’s tough in football, so we have to pay great credit to the players because without them we wouldn’t be standing here today. We’re very proud of them.”
Captain Ian Evatt was quick to applaud the fans too, saying:
“Thanks for everyone coming out today on such a rainy day.”
Despite the rain though, the fans’ spirits were clearly far from dampened.
Eager to celebrate the victorious season – which also included a Wembley final – many fans were already talking about how the team will fare in League One football next season.
