Chesterfield train services disrupted due to landslip

Trains between Nottingham and Sheffield were greatly disrupted recently following a sizeable landslip between Chesterfield and Sheffield.

The embankment in question was reported to have been slowly moving ever since a prolonged spell of severe bad weather during January, and it eventually reached a point where it was causing considerable damage to the track.

Following the potential for disruption, it is likely that a bout of notice and flyer printing was called for in order to spread an awareness of the issues amongst passengers. Many travellers will have had to make alternative Plans, and the original expectation was that part of the line would be shut for as long as six weeks while repairs were being carried out.

Shortly after the landslip, Network Rail’s Phil Verster said:

"This decision has been taken to protect the safety of everyone who uses and works on the railway. We thank passengers and our freight customers for their patience as we deal with this situation.”

Northern Rail trains linking Sheffield and Chesterfield were replaced by buses for the entire disruption period, although East Midlands trains between Chesterfield and Nottingham continued to run. Another East Midlands Trains service, between Nottingham and Sheffield, was also affected and people were warned to expect delays of up to 20 minutes when they were travelling along this stretch.
