People in Chesterfield were last week able to travel back in time and experience the 1940s as the Market Festival opened in the town.
Thousands came for the three-day event in the centre of town, as traders from the local flea market donned authentic 40s gear and set up shop to sell produce and goods.
Many of the stalls maintained the theme by selling items with a distinct 40s feel to them.
Visitors were also treated to the annual Bargain Hunt event, during which Chesterfield’s mayor and mayoress, as well as staff from Banner Jones Solicitors, teamed up with antique experts James Lewis and Anita Manning, who both present the popular BBC programme, Antiques Road Trip. All proceeds from the Bargain Hunt competition went to the Mayor’s Appeal.
Speaking to the Chesterfield Post, the town’s mayor, Councillor Paul Stone, said he received positive comments about residents welcoming visitors at the market.
Antiques expert Lewis started out by working in flea markets and according to the Chesterfield Post, he said it is good to see the town’s market doing so well – considering the fact that similar events all over the UK are struggling.
In an effort to encourage more people to come to markets, either to sell or to buy, many organisers turn to professionals for services such as poster printing.
Chesterfield has always had the market at its heart, according to Lewis. The town has been successful in promoting the event, drawing around £2 million from investors based in Europe.
