This multi-million pound scheme will see the northern entrance to Chesterfield undergo significant improvements, including the renovation and expansion of the car park at Saltergate, the construction of a brand new enterprise hub for local businesses, and enhancements to the streets and environment at Elder Way and Knifesmithgate.
The new proposal is likely to cost in the region of £19.9 million to complete, with £10.5 million of this going towards the Co-op store redevelopment. This will see a basement fitness centre, a two-storey hotel and several restaurants on the ground floor being built.
While this part of the project is being privately financed, funding for the rest is coming via a grant from the Sheffield City Region Infrastructure Fund, as well as from Chesterfield Borough Council.
The regeneration member of the cabinet and leader of the borough council, John Burrows, told the Derbyshire Times that:
“The revised project is another example of how Chesterfield can benefit from gaining funding from the Sheffield City Region to deliver projects which will create jobs in Derbyshire."
Once the project is underway, the council can always rely on brochure printers to help showcase the final result.
