Chesterfield market revitalisation plans announced

Chesterfield Borough Council has announced the development of a multimillion pound plan to bring the beloved market in the town back to life.

This will be part of a wider project being called Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield and is expected to cost £3.25m in total. The Council has stated that it is looking at possibilities for the redesign of the market and will make these widely available to those living in the town later this year, ahead of a public consultation on them.

Plans for breathing fresh life into the market have been greeted with enthusiasm by those who have stalls there; with many indicating that they consider it something that should have happened years ago.

Speaking to the Derbyshire Times, Chesterfield Market antiques trader Luke Povey said:

“Personally, I’d like to see the creation of space which can accommodate things like regular events and attractions, to bring more footfall and custom to the area.”

Poster printing, supplied by Print shops in the local area, is sometimes used by people running market stalls to help them advertise what they are selling.

Povey’s ideas were backed by fellow stallholder Steph Mannion, with both also calling for a general refurbishment of the area and lower charges for parking.

It is hoped that work on the market can be completed by Spring 2022.
