Chesterfield Market revamp under council consideration

Chesterfield Market, which has been in existence since 1165 and is among the largest markets in the whole of England, could be set for a major revamp.

The borough council has announced that it will explore the possibility of redesigning the outdoor market, with the aim of increasing the number of local shoppers and traders using the facility.

This news comes following a report submitted to the council, which states that the existing market is failing to reach its full potential due to a combination of falling customer numbers and a poor visual appearance.

It argues that traders new to the market currently struggle to establish their stalls there, due to stalls not being prominently positioned, which in turn leads many potential customers to think that it is empty.

The report points out:

“The success of the town as a shopping destination depends to a great extent on the market.

“Markets have a key role to play in attracting shoppers and visitors back into the town centre.”

Now the council has agreed to provide the £15,000 for a study looking into a possible redesign, and it would be able to call on flyer printing in Chesterfield (Brampton) to help promote a revamped market to locals.

The final decision will be made once costs are known and following a consultation process with both shoppers and those traders based at the market.
