Ukulele orchestra coming to Basingstoke

A group that has helped make the ukulele one of the most widely-played musical instruments around the country thanks to its sparkling live concerts, is coming to Basingstoke this month.

The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain has spent much of the last 30 years travelling all over the world to perform its unique take on popular songs, but now it is returning to play in Basingstoke.

The Anvil will serve as the venue for this concert and it is fair to say that those who attend will have never seen – or heard – anything quite like it. The orchestra’s performances see a massed rank of ukuleles pounding out songs like ‘Psycho Killer’ by the Talking Heads and ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana.

It was launched by Kitty Lux and George Hinchcliffe during the mid-1980s, and they considered it a bit of fun – but it has since grown beyond their wildest dreams. Leisa Rea, a member of the orchestra, told the Basingstoke Gazette that:

“We are lucky enough to have survived 32 years as the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and we’ve played to sell out audiences all over the world many times, including the North Pole…all because of the humble ukulele.”

This concert will take place on 12th May and full colour printing may be used to ensure that it is advertised with eye-catching Posters.
