Swimming success for Basingstoke Bluefins

The team representing Basingstoke Bluefins swimming club enjoyed success recently, while participated in an open water competitive event.

When it came to the Jubilee River race along a 10-kilometre course, Rowan Williams took the honours for the Bluefins, finishing as the female entrant with the fastest time.

She was competing alongside three other Bluefins members: Joanne Postins, Brett Cherrington and Zoe Sadler. The event involved swimming different lengths, with the legs being 1.5 kilometres, 2.6 kilometres, 3.5 kilometres and 1.9 kilometres.

When it comes to open water swimming events, the early stages are always reportedly the hardest and Williams had to overcome the major disadvantage of swimming against older, bigger-built competitors.

To compensate for this, she sought to get in front right from the beginning and secured a significant lead over the mass of swimmers behind her, with this tactic proving to be successful.

Williams then succeeded in becoming part of a four-strong group able to work on a team basis, finishing this first part of the race in 15th position, before moving one place up at the end of the second leg.

However, it was in the final section of the race that Williams really excelled, taking approximately 20 minutes to finish, which guaranteed her the fastest woman spot.

Local sporting events of this type often use poster printing in Basingstoke and other towns to promote them to interested people.
