Go-ahead given for revamp of Basingstoke club

The Sports and Social Club in Basingstoke is set to be given a new look, after Plans for its redevelopment got the green light from the local council.

This building originally dates back to 1865 and is located in May’s Bounty. The Plans for overhauling its facilities were first revealed over a year ago, but with planning permission now having been secured, the final funding can be sought – and it is set to be a complete transformation.

Four brand new changing rooms for unisex use are to be built outside the main building, two of which will be for officials and two for squash players. There will also be toilets and changing rooms added on the downstairs level of the club.

The intention behind this is to make it a better place for members with disabilities. Speaking to the Basingstoke Gazette, Steve Rayner, the chairman said he was delighted to finally be able to proceed with the improvements, adding:
“There were limitations and other areas that we had to convince people of, but the people we’ve been working with have been behind us, and that is great. We are really pleased, and now, now we can just get on with it.”

It is hoped that work will begin next year. Clubs of this kind often rely on places providing flyer printing to advertise events.
