Basingstoke school marks WWI centenary with afternoon activities

According to the Basingstoke Gazette, students from The Costello School in Basingstoke recently held an event to mark the passing of 100 years since the First World War.

The occasion involved an afternoon of activities, run by around 70 pupils from the school.

Roger Gardiner, Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, along with Mayoress Tricia Gardiner, had the honour of opening the event, which began with a football game that had teams swapping a specially made pennant.

Visitors also had the chance to browse the students’ research into relatives that may have been involved in the war, which was given to them as a project to undertake prior to the event.

Other activities on the afternoon included students reading out wartime diary extracts or poems, as well as a sing-along opportunity with wartime favourites like ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’ and ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’.

Food on offer included tea and cakes in the afternoon, which was made and given out by the students. T-Shirts to commemorate the event were also on sale during the day, showing how useful digital printing in Basingstoke can be.

A history teacher at the school, Sophie Pyne, told The Basingstoke Gazette that they were pleased with the turnout. The Gazette also stated that £170 was raised for the Royal British Legion Basingstoke branch.
