Basingstoke pupils get on their feet to improve local streets

Pupils at local schools in Basingstoke are being advised to get on their feet and take to the streets in a bid to boost their wellbeing, and reduce congestion, as part of a new campaign to get more children walking to school each week.

Charity organisation Living Streets are working in conjunction with Hampshire County Council to get local school children to take part in their WOW – Walk Once a Week – programme which involves organised and supervised walks to schools each week.

Teachers in the area are being encouraged to take part in the scheme and a wealth of supporting resources are on offer to help teachers to engage their students and their parents in the WOW programme. Stickers, Posters, guides and wall charts are all available to download and reproduce from Living Streets using full colour printing. Basingstoke pupils could see a range of health benefits from taking part in the scheme and local residents would benefit from a decrease in traffic congestion.

Councillor Mel Kendal is the executive member for environment and transport at the local council. Kendal commented on the scheme, saying:

“Over half of primary children do not walk to school regularly. Although this is unavoidable in some cases, being driven to school every day can mean that children miss out on learning valuable lessons about road safety and how to keep themselves safe.”

More information on the scheme can be found by contacting Living Streets directly.
