Back in 2010, Phil Gordon was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, having been admitted to Basingstoke Hospital suffering from severe back pain. The pain was so unbearable that Gordon was unsurprised to find out how seriously ill he was.
The 38-year-old went on to recover, following a tough battle that lasted for nine months, and he is now taking on a year of charity activities – having been encouraged to do so by encountering one of the surgeons who operated on him.
So far, he has organised a game of football, a darts competition and a pub quiz, bringing in close to £3,000 in the process. However, in April he will crank his efforts up a notch by running the London Marathon.
Speaking to the Basingstoke Observer, he said:
“I was always a champion of the NHS but I have always felt indebted to the NHS and the staff at Basingstoke Hospital for the care I received. The urology team at Basingstoke saved my life and I see this as an opportunity to give something back.”
The marathon will take place on 23rd April and his family and friends may wish to make use of banner printing to help support him during the run.
