Basingstoke pinks it up for charity

Staff at a supermarket in Basingstoke turned pink for a day recently, to help encourage local girls and women to take part in this month's Race for Life for Cancer Research UK.

The annual event, marked by a mass of pink poster printing, raises thousands of pounds for the charity. Last year, with over 2,800 women taking part, nearly £185,000 was added to the cancer-fighting coffers.

With more people and more money targeted at this year’s event, staff at the local Tesco in Chineham replaced their usual uniforms for pink clothes. Their aim is to get as many women to take part in the 5km or 10 km walk/run/hobble challenge.

The 'community champion' for the store, Julie Shepherd, said:

“I’m so pleased that all the staff went the extra mile to get involved.

“We hope we can inspire women to join in the fun and enter their local Race for Life event.”

With the Tesco men taking part too, the staff's efforts also received the congratulations of Lea Blake, the Race for Life events manager in the south east.

He said:

“We’d like to thank the Tesco staff for getting involved, and turning the store pink for the day.

“We can’t wait to cheer their team and all the other thousands of ladies over the finish line on the day.”

This year's Race for Life event takes place on Sunday, 18th June at Down Grange Sports Complex, with people encouraged to 'walk, run, dance or hula hoop’ the course through the day.
