The local council has invested £10.6 million into this project, which is focused on the stretch of motorway between the roundabouts at Great Binfields Lane and the Ringway. It will involve widening roundabouts and approach roads, the installation of new traffic lights and enhanced drainage, cycle and pedestrian facilities.
This ambitious project was initially announced during 2016, but it took until the end of July for an official start date to be set. It is expected to be completed by early 2019.
The environment and transport member of the council, Rob Humby, told the Basingstoke Observer that it was one of the most important strategic routes that connects the town with Reading and offers access to business parks, adding:
“During peak times travellers can get caught up in heavy congestion. These improvements by the county council aim to reduce delays and queuing and will also upgrade the drainage system to minimise the risk of flooding between the two roundabouts.”
When work of this kind is being carried out, places that provide services like sign printing are often called upon to make sure people know what areas are off limits for the duration of the work.
