Basingstoke gym gets accessibility award

A local gym in Basingstoke has received an award in recognition of the fact that it has gone to great lengths to make its fitness facilities available to disabled people.

The Basingstoke Aquadrome, a sports and leisure facility based at Churchill Way Leisure Park, recently received an accolade as a testament to the work the organisation has done to make its facilities easier to use for people living with a disability. The award that was given is known as the Inclusive Fitness Mark and this is awarded by the English Federation of Disability Sport.

A number of improvements have been made to the Aquadrome under the guidance of Lloyd Staszkiewicz, a senior fitness instructor at the facility. These improvements include installing special treadmills that are approved by the Inclusive Fitness Mark scheme and a hearing loop for people with hearing impairments. Many gyms, leisure venues and other facilities that are trying to be more inclusive also look to produce things like timetables in large format Print, often calling upon the help of a local printing company in Basingstoke to do this.

The Basingstoke and Dean Borough Council Cabinet member for communities, sport and culture is Elaine Still. Councillor Still spoke about the award given to the gym, saying:

“We are committed to improving access to sporting facilities for disabled people and participation in the borough. This is a tremendous achievement and I would like to congratulate everyone who has been involved.”
