Web users searching for the town at the start of May would instead have seen it marked as 'Town Centre'.
When alerted to the mishap, a spokesman for the California-based firm apologised, quipping:
"Whoops. Sorry for the mix-up. An engineer is quite literally putting Basingstoke on the map."
Basingstoke was quickly added back on to Google Maps after the error was pointed out, but for some time, many people may not have been to find the place at all.
Branding the cartographical calamity as 'ridiculous', a spokesman for the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce (HCC) was eager to say what an amazing place the town was. Highlighting how the mistake was something of a blot on the landscape, Chris Quintana from the HCC said:
"'Town Centre' – why would anyone put it down like that?
"This town is not called 'Town Centre' it has a name and it is called Basingstoke."
Claiming that such an oversight could potentially damage investment coming into the UK, Quintana stressed the town's connections to Farnborough and London Heathrow airports.
The error does not mark the first time a location has dropped off the Google radar; last summer, the Scottish island of Jura – famed as the place where George Orwell wrote 1984 – disappeared briefly.
