Tameside council and college to occupy new green building

A new eco-friendly building is set to replace Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council’s current Ashton-under-Lyne offices. It will be shared with Tameside College as well as a number of businesses.

Ambitious Plans for the Wellington Road site – which are part of the £76m redevelopment of the town centre – involve the opening of a greener, more modern building.

Another facility to be constructed by Tameside College will include a large theatre and classrooms specially designed for creative students. The college is paying for most of the project itself, but a portion of the cash will come from the Skills Funding Agency.

The council is expected to spend around £13m on its new eco-friendly premises – around £2 million less than what it would have had to spend to refurbish its existing offices.

Around £1.5 million will be saved in running costs every year, according to the council.

Cllr Kieran Quinn said the programme will bring a huge boost to the economy of Ashton-under-Lyne’s town centre, drawing students and teachers in their thousands. He added that the new offices will enable the town to be turned into a more modern and convenient shopping hub. The building will also house a Wilkinson outlet.

When councils want to publicise details of redevelopment work and new facilities, they often turn to professional brochure printing services. Ashton-under-Lyne students running the restaurant, bakery and salon at the college’s Beaufort Road site will work at the new centre once it’s complete, allowing residents to sample the students’ work.
