Football team launched in Ashton-under-Lyne

A new football team has been started in Ashton-under-Lyne, and it is aiming to kick off a national conversation about mental health issues that affect men and boys.

The team has been called Infinity FC and is a partnership with Infinity Initiatives, which is an Ashton charity that has won awards for its work with vulnerable people. Despite having only just started, the team has already found 25 players for its squad, as well as amassing 224 followers on the social media site, Facebook.

The founders of the team are Gemma Whittaker, the director of the charity, and 23-year-old voluntary worker Djamal Denidni, with the idea coming to them in the period leading up to the festive season. Local football teams can always use Print shops based in the area to meet their match day needs.

Having received a huge amount of support for the project, they have decided to apply for the money that they need to buy equipment like football kits. Speaking to the Tameside Reporter, Denidni stated:

“It’s just a great way to come together if people need someone to speak to, get a bit of exercise and make friends. Plus, if anyone has any issues we’re in a position to point them to the resources at Infinity Initiatives.”

The team is set to play its first game on 23rd March.
