Bus station revamp plans approved

Plans to demolish the existing bus station in Ashton-under-Lyne and replace it with a brand new interchange costing £33 million have been approved, allowing work to begin later this year.

This new interchange will be located nearer to the train station and Metrolink stop, the latter of which was opened during 2013. Plans for a replacement bus station formed part of the Ashton-under-Lyne town centre framework for 2012, which the local authority published.

Now this project has been awarded planning permission by Tameside Council and with the 2016/17 Local Growth Fund financing in place, there are no further barriers to work beginning.

It will see the five existing platforms demolished, with one, fully covered concourse taking their place. There will also be upgraded facilities for waiting, improved ticket and travel information access and better bicycle parking areas.

An in-depth design phase is the next stage for this scheme, with the end of the year pencilled in as the favoured date for building work to commence. Speaking to Place North West, Tameside Council leader, Kieran Quinn, said that the new interchange promised to be fantastic, adding:

“The Plans point to a much more pleasant place to be than the current station which, compared to the existing facility, will be much lighter and much more welcoming.”
