Building in Ashton-under-Lyne to be refurbished

A new company focused on projects of community interest has been launched in Ashton-under-Lyne with the aim of refurbishing the derelict building that used to be home to the Majestic cinema.

Tameside Live Society is the brainchild of Matt Gough, who lives in the Dukinfield area of Greater Manchester, where he has been based since 2014. He works as a designer and has exciting ideas for what could be done with the building.

Speaking to the Tameside Reporter, he stated that he had asked his wife what was happening with it when they first arrived in the area and that he couldn’t believe an art deco building from the 1920s had been left derelict, adding that the owner was keen for it to be saved:

“He doesn’t want to just sell it on to someone who will redevelop the site. So we set up the Tameside Live Society to try and save the building and make a difference in the community.”

During the initial redevelopment phase, the foyer of the building will undergo renovation. This still boasts many of the original features, alongside modern electrics, and will become an arts café for local filmmakers, musicians and artists.

The group is seeking to raise the necessary financing via crowd funding, but leaflet printing can also be used to let people know about their Plans.
