Ashton-under-Lyne town centre set for major revamp

An ambitious multi-million pound plan for the redevelopment of the town centre in Ashton-under-Lyne has been unveiled to residents.

These Plans will see the existing offices of Tameside Council demolished, with a new environmentally friendly building replacing them, which the council will share with local businesses and Tameside College.

The college also intends to build a further development on the site of the car park in Camp Street, which will contain classrooms for teaching its arts, media and creative courses, as well as a theatre seating 200 people.

The majority of the £76 million needed for the redevelopment project is being provided by the college, with the Skills Funding Agency set to contribute one third of the costs.

The new-look town centre is expected to bring an extra 300 staff and 3,000 students into the area and Kieran Quinn, the council leader, said:

“This programme will not only give a massive boost to the Ashton town centre economy by bringing in thousands of students and teaching staff, but it will also enable us to complete our Plans to redevelop the town centre and market ground area and make it into a more modern, attractive and convenient place to visit and shop.”

It should prove a real fillip for local businesses, like Stationery printers in Ashton-under-Lyne, which will be able to supply necessary materials for the college.

Work is expected to begin in spring 2015.
