Ashton-under-Lyne concert for cello whiz kid

An 11-year-old musical maestro from Denton will play a concert at the Albion Church in Ashton-under-Lyne later this month, as he bids to continue his rise.

The sold-out concert, which poster printing helped ensure, is being held as Callum Hilton Plans to raise cash for a new cello. Hailed by a number of people as a future star, Callum already plays the piano to a high standard, having taught himself the ins and outs of the instrument.

It is a more notable rise than many so-called musical prodigies though, as Callum suffered from a condition affecting his hearing as a younger child. This saw him fall behind at school, with his mum, Tracy, instead using classical music to help him learn at home. She explained:

“He was only four or five at this stage so I just let him mess around on a small child’s keyboard, but at the age of six he asked if he could have a piano for his birthday.”

His interests continued to grow until, after seeing an orchestral production, Callum opted to move from the keyboards to the cello. Now taking lessons, he enrolled at Chetham’s School of Music for summer classes.

Offered a scholarship, it was there that his talent took off and the maestro has continued to grow and learn – and has now started creating his own compositions too.
