Experienced hikers are invited to a challenging walk this week, setting off from Stalybridge just a mile from Ashton-under-Lyne.
The guided walk is expected to take about six hours, and sets off from Castle Clough car park. Participants will walk over the Tameside border to Saddleworth’s Chew Valley, before heading over to Dovestone Reservoir, and then finally swinging back around to Stalybridge via the Tame Valley.
Dovestone Reservoir is known for its picturesque landscape, and sits on the Peak District National Park’s western perimeter. Lying where the Chew Brooks and Greenfield valleys meet, it is the source of drinking water for the surrounding area, and also a popular spot with tourists.
Chew Valley joins the River Tame, and at its higher fringes, heads towards the Black Chew Head across the county line in Derbyshire. It includes the Chew Reservoir, which was the highest reservoir in the country when it was constructed back in 1912.
The word can be spread about local events within the local community, like this guided walk, by a flyer printing campaign.
Those thinking of joining the walk are notified that the route is 11 miles, and not suited to inexperienced hikers. The walk starts at 10pm this Sunday (4 February).
Lunch and drinks should be taken along by walkers, and sturdy footwear, along with suitable outdoor clothing, is required. The starting point, Castle Clough car park, can be found at Carrbrook in Stalybridge.
