Regeneration expert looks to bring Altrincham Market back to life

A leading figure in the regeneration of Manchester has expressed a wish to revive Altrincham’s historic market.

Former Marketing Manchester chairman Nick Johnson said he hopes a refit, which is scheduled for Spring 2014, will draw crowds to the town centre’s food and crafts stalls.

Mr Johnson made his name as a king of regeneration after spending 15 years working with Urban Splash and leading a variety of development projects, such as the extensive revamp of the New Islington area of Manchester.

Speaking recently, he said that the market – which has been running for more than 130 years – could be developed into an important regional hub for craft businesses and locally made food.

Last month, shoppers in the town were treated to a preview of what’s to come when dozens of independent traders set their stalls up alongside live music from Phil Saunders, a blues musician, and Helen Maher, who plays the piano accordion.

Speaking about the event, Mr Johnson said:

“We are redefining what a market is in a modern market town to face up to the challenge of the high street.

“It’s about bringing some fantastic independent food and craft and vintage people into one place, and trying to create an experience for people that is rewarding.

“There’s nothing corporate about the market, it’s just independent businesses.”

As well as encouraging locals to attend by offering new incentives, such as live entertainment, event organisers also tend to make use of professional flyer printing in Altrincham.

A special Christmas-themed market will be held later this year.
