Together with the Ladies Inner Wheel in the town, a meeting was held during February at Altrincham’s Cresta Court Hotel, during which Susan Henry spoke about her trip to the southeast African state Malawi, where she was a Wateraid representative.
Over 70 people were at the meeting to hear her describe how those living in the nation are forced to travel miles each day for inadequate amounts of water, leading to endemic cholera.
Ken Garrity, from the Rotary Club, told Messenger Newspapers that the talk had left them with the feeling that they should be doing more to help, before adding:
“There are some 748 million people without safe drinking water and 1,400 children die every day from drinking unsafe or contaminated water. Just £15 helps one person for a year.”
Aside from the presentation given by Susan Henry, the event at the hotel was also intended as a way of raising money for this cause, and a number of activities – including a raffle with prizes – were held to assist with this.
Charity nights of this type often make use of flyer printing in Altrincham and similar areas, to help get people through the doors.
The fundraiser organised by the Rotary Club succeeded in bringing in close to £1,000.
