Over a thousand residents of the town were there for this ceremony on the 21st November, which proved to be the year’s busiest day for local shops, and they found a packed programme of festive fun.
Prior to the lights being switched on, crowds were treated to music performances from the Music Place Choir, Broomwood Primary School, Jess Kemp, Blank Cheque and Educated Risk.
There were also activities specifically designed for families – such as free workshops teaching them how to make lanterns - and appearances by Elsa from the film Frozen and local football mascot Rocky Robin.
Captain Christmas and his Merry Band led crowds on a lantern parade through the town centre, where they witnessed another show, before Chris Johnson and Katie Thistleton took to the stage for the switch on countdown.
Member of the board for Altrincham Forward and local councillor, Michael Young, told a reporter from Messenger Newspapers that:
“Saturday was a magical day in Altrincham and an excellent opening to this year’s Christmas programme in the town centre.”
