This is the story of a pair of wandering mendicants, Estragon and Vladimir, who are waiting by a solitary tree to meet Mr Godot. He is an elusive individual who inhabits a world where the distinctions between time and place as well as memory have all become blurred. Meaning can only be found where one chooses to find it.
The pair live in the expectation that meeting Godot will transform their lives. In reality, two eccentric male characters turn up, one man holding the other on a rope. The consequences are both humorous and dangerous.
Samuel Beckett's play took the London stage by storm in 1953, simultaneously shocking and entertaining audiences. An existential classic, it is now widely recognised as among the most important plays of the last century. According to a source, the play is:
"Not so much a tragicomedy as a comedie pathetique, it is theatrically stripped to the bone - a kind of reverse-engineered drama."
