Moose Jaw is a city with a bright economic future, and there is one area where this is especially apparent.
The community’s Manager of Planning and Building has reported that, while the number of building permits issued for the year is down over the numbers for 2012, the value of those permits has shown a sizeable increase. In fact, they are the highest on record.
To put this into numerical terms, there were 321 permits issued this year, with a total value of $96.13 million. In 2012, there were 392 granted with a total value of $68.11 million. This represents a difference of 41%.
The reason for this increase is believed to be that many larger and high value projects, such as the hospital and multiple dwelling units, are being constructed. While single family dwellings may have been the more predominant type of home construction in the past, buildings that can house many families are becoming more common. It is expected that this trend will continue into the foreseeable future.
In the final month of 2013, there were fewer permits issued, mostly because the city has only one building official who can do so, and this individual was on vacation for the later part of the month.
