This March, Moose Jaw will host LitCon, a one-day conference aimed at self-published and independent authors in all stages of their careers.
The day will be full of talks and events designed to help authors understand all facets of the publishing industry. The book market is constantly changing, and recent years have seen the rise in popularity of genres like young adult fiction, creative nonfiction and graphic novels. Many writers now turn to self-publishing through online printing services, local Print shops, or eBook marketplaces. The goal of LitCon is to help writers understand these changes and hopefully have some fun along the way.
Presentation topics include “How to Let Your Voice Shine in Genre Fiction”, “Active Dialogue in KidsLit” and “The Nuts and Bolts of Chills and Thrills.” Among the speakers are novelist Suzy Krause, presenting on writing program Scrivener, and retired police officer Kim Calfas, speaking on the reality of crime fiction tropes. Authors will be able to participate in “pitch sessions”, gaining experience on how to sell their Books to prospective publishers or distributors. The day will conclude on a humorous note, with readings from the worst of editors’ “slush piles”, and with an opportunity to socialize and sell books.
LitCon is presented by the Saskatchewan Festival of Words, which in addition to its summer book festival holds events like LitCon year-round. It will take place on March 21 at the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre.
