The summer Festival of Words’ cinematic series celebrated its 20th edition with a special screening at the Mae Wilson Theatre.
The CineView series, which films an independent or arthouse movie every month, selected 2017 Australian comedy Finding Your Feet to be screened at the special occasion. The film details a recent divorcee’s attempt to reinvent her life with the help of a dance class in a faraway place.
The screening took place on January 9. The Mae Wilson is a change from the series’ usual venue of the Galaxy Cinema. The historic building, once known as the Capitol Theatre, is part of the Moose Jaw Cultural Centre. Due to some of its technology being outdated, the theatre has been unable to show many recent films, and it only recently began to allow beverages. However, the Festival of Words is working with the Cultural Centre to update the theatre and plans to display more films there in the future.
With the milestone anniversary behind it, CineView resumes its typical monthly series. Highlights of the upcoming schedule include If Beale Street Could Talk, Academy Award-winning director Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of James Baldwin’s book; and French psychological drama Non-Fiction.
Local screening events like this help to bring the highlights of local film festivals to less cosmopolitan cities like Moose Jaw.
