The game, a March meeting with the Brandon Wheat Kings, will include information on how to use Canadian Mental Health Association resources. While few details have been provided, similar programs have used tools such as announcements on video screens, booths to visit, informative banner printing, and other methods to raise awareness. The program is sponsored by RE/MAX, a frequent sponsor of the Western Hockey League.
The game night will be part of the WHL’s Talk Today Game Nights program, which sees all 17 WHL teams hosting a similar awareness event at a home WHL game in February and March. It is an expansion of the Talk Today program developed and used across the league to provide mental health for amateur athletes. The program’s spokesman is Kelly Hrudey, a WHL alumni who went on to have a 15-season career in the NHL and an extensive broadcasting career. Hrudey explained his motivation for participating in the program:
“Raising awareness about mental health is something that is important to me and my family. Help us break down the barriers when it comes to the stigma around mental health.”
The Moose Jaw Warriors Talk Today Game Night will take place at the March 5 game against Brandon at Mosaic Place.
