In what is becoming as much of a Halloween tradition as pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating, Moose Jaw will be holding its 14th annual Better Together Food Drive at the end of the month.
The drive will be held to benefit the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank, which helps out food-insecure people in the area. All kinds of nonperishable foods are welcome, ranging from boxed cereal to frozen food. Even fresh fruit or vegetables can be a good contribution.
Founded in 1984, the Food Bank now claims to serve between 800 and 900 people each month, with 1 in 12 Moose Jaw households receiving support. Half of the people it provides food for are children.
Charitable efforts like this are largely run on volunteer passion, and Better Together is no exception. The event will be looking for volunteers, particularly those with trucks or trailers, throughout the month of October, and ultimately hopes to recruit about 400 people to help out on Halloween night. Charities and non-governmental organisations often use flyer printing and brochure printing to recruit volunteers and participants, as well as to raise awareness of their services.
Moose Jaw residents should expect to receive a bag at their door a week before Halloween, which they can fill with nonperishable items. Volunteers will then come to pick up items on the evening of October 31, and take them to the Moose Jaw Exhibition Centre, where goods can also be dropped off. The large collection site is a sign of how successful the drive has been in previous years.
