Curling fans in Moose Jaw will pleased to hear that the national Wheelchair Curling Championships are now scheduled to take place in the city for two consecutive years.
Moose Jaw was originally set to hold the 2021 edition of the event this winter, but with the cancellation of the bonspiel, the Saskatchewan city will now be home to the 2022 and 2023 editions.
The city successfully hosted the Scotties Tournament of Hearts last year, as well as tournaments like the Canada Cup of Curling and the World Women’s Curling Championship in the past. As host city, Moose Jaw will be able to enter up to two local teams in the tournament. Likely contenders are Moose Javians Marie Wright and Gil Dash, who won the tournament representing Saskatchewan in 2018, with Wright going on to be part of the bronze medal winning team at the Paralympics.
Wheelchair curling is similar to the standing game, but played from a stationary chair and without any sweeping. The sport is contested between mixed teams of two men and two women. The 2022 championship will help to determine the Canadian team for the Winter Paralympic Games.
Sports spectators often use tools like banner printing and chants to show their support for teams.
The Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships will take place at the Moose Jaw Curling Centre on February 21 to 26, 2022 and February 20 to 25, 2023.
